Winter Sports Excel (Again)
Commemorative Athletics Issue
The story of the track team this year was one of a miraculous comeback. The winter indoor track season is the longest, and running at “championship caliber” extracts a hefty toll. According to runner Noah Smith ’27, the team spent this past season “shoulder-to-the-plow, grinding [and] putting work in.” Thus, by the week
of the Virginia Prep League championship, many of the team’s athletes were riddled by injuries from the season’s wear and tear. Despite valiant efforts from a few high-scoring runners, “depth ended up being the deciding factor”, according to Jayden Brown ’25.

However, this wasn’t going to stop them... The next weekend, the “script flipped” at the VISAA State Championship. The team brought stand-out performances in all categories, with two school records in the 4x2 Relay and Pole Vault. The 4x2 record (1:30.77) was set by Will Ackerly ’27, Jaerron Johnson ’27, Elisha Asare ’26 and Mad-dox White ’26. Victor Olesen ’26 impressed yet again, continuing his pole vaulting dominance. Olesen broke his own record (17 to 17.5), which he set in middle school. These records, along with many individual personal bests, created a “newfound sense of confidence.”

The team ended up dominating the meet for its second straight State Title, finishing as both the strongest team and with the best individual performances.
