Welcome to the new school year! My name is Lawler Wherry ‘28, and I’m so excited to be co-editor this year with Robert Head ‘26. Robert will be running The Pine Needle in the winter, I in the fall and we will both be leading this spring.
The Pine Needle has served the STC community for over a century now, and I hope to instill a passion for student writing into the STC ethos for years to come. I could not be clearer on my love for all types of writing. If you visit a restaurant and the food is exceptional, consider writing a review! If you go to a restaurant and the waiter was a jerk, write about it! Maybe you loved the new Hollow Knight: Silksong; that’s an article! I think you get my point. If you have the desire to write something that is a bit more intellectually stimulating than your Instagram notes, then please reach out to Pineneedle@gmail.com. St. Christopher’s is filled with so many excellent writers. If allowed to write what they want, I genuinely believe that The Pine Needle will continue to be a wonderful place where students can enjoy hearing from their peers and develop a love for writing.
Along with our wonderful physical form, the newest Pine Needle website has gone live, and it comes with an exciting facelift. Firstly, a new PDF format will be used to display each respective edition as it is released. While the importance of the physical paper form cannot be overstated, the fact is that an online paper provides both a valuable tool for maintaining historical records and a resource for students’ research for hundreds of years, just as the Virginia Chronicle was for the journalism class last semester. Moreover, the possibilities for engagement when a publication has a format that is not limited to its physical presence are exponential. The Pine Needle will continue to print monthly copies, and I hope that you will be able to read them as they come out. But if you miss one visit thepineneedle.org.
Please reach out if you are interested in contributing to The Pine Needle in any way: graphic design, writing, or photography. Have a great year!
