A Bounty of New Teachers: The New Teachers of The ’25-’26 School Year
After subbing long term Ms. Jeanmarie McFadden is excited to join the St. Christopher’s Math Department full time.
Her perspective is different from any other teacher I have interviewed, having worked “half…in corporate and half…teaching.” She earned her degree from the University of Virginia in mathematics and computer science. Initially, she couldn’t find a job, as she lived in rural western Virginia, and the opportunities for tech jobs were sparse. Luckily, the scarcity led her to a new passion: “I started teaching and really fell in love with [it].”Eventually, she moved back to the city and began work at Independent Project Analysis, where she programmed data analytics for scientific models. This means that she developed programs that predict weather patterns, climate change or run molecular simulations. She also worked at several other jobs in the IT industry, including her most recent corporate position at Berkshire Hathaway Energy. There, she was developing a project that tracked flow data in pipelines using GIS (Geographic Information System) data. GIS is the same data standard that is used for GPS systems like Apple Maps and Waze. Along with day to day use, this system is used by NASA and many other companies for its precise location-specific data.
Ms. McFadden is also an elections officer with the Virginia Department of Elections (VDE). With a history as the IT project manager for the VDE, she is well qualified to be one of the people who ensure that the electronic voting booths operate on election day. She was also the IT project manager at the State Department of Elections in 2020 through 2021. She came from Bishop O’Connell high school where she taught computer science and was the IT director for six years. Ms. McFadden joins us this year to teach two sections of Geometry and Algebra 2.
