Saints Swimming had an amazing season this year, finishing with a near-perfect 11-1 re-cord and only falling to Douglas Freeman High School. Recently, they capped off this outstanding season by securing wins at the Prep-League Meet and VISAA State Championship Meet.
At the Virginia Prep League Swim & Dive Meet, the team won in dominant fashion, finishing with 511 total points (almost 200 points more than second place). In the 200 Med-ley Relay, Ryan Smith ’26, Ed-ward Johnson ’26, Alex Gertner ’25 and Ben Butterfield ’25 won first place with a time of 1:34.23, which is a meet record. Gertner won the 200 freestyle, Smith won the 100 butterfly and John-son was victorious in the 100 breaststroke. In addition, Ben Franks ’27 championed the 500 freestyle, with James Edwards ’27 and Will Franks ’28 (myself) rounding out the podium. Finally, the relay team of Gertner, Smith, Franks and Johnson were champions in the 400 free-style relay. Overall, the Saints had a very successful meet with dozens of personal bests and podium finishes. Furthermore, this victory marked the Saints’ 8th straight win at the Prep League Meet, continuing to extend the program’s dominant streak.
At the State Championship Meet, four school records were set, including the 200 medley relay with a team of Smith, Johnson, Gertner and Butterfield, who placed first with a time of 1:32:79. This performance also earned a new state record. Senior Captain Alex Gertner also swam two individual school records in the 100 freestyle and the 100 butterfly.
Lastly, the 400 freestyle team of Gertner, Smith, Franks and Johnson broke the school record with a time of 3:04:38, placing second. The 200 freestyle team comprised of senior captain Butterfield, Joseph Connor ’25, Senior Captain Christian Rogers ’25 and Ben Franks placed second. In diving, Levi Jones ’27 finished fourth in the OneMeter Diving competition. Many more podium and finals swims helped propel the Saints to their 5th straight VISAA state title.
